Renting a car while traveling: what to check before departure

A rental car gives you the freedom to change your route, stop in small towns and reach places that public transport cannot easily access. Before choosing a vehicle, compare not only the daily price but also the deposit, mileage limits, insurance coverage and border-crossing rules.

Before departure, carefully inspect the bodywork, wheels, windows and interior. Photograph every scratch and mark together with the rental employee, then make sure the damage is recorded in the agreement. Check the fuel level, lights, spare wheel and the support number you should call if the car breaks down.

Keep receipts from fuel stations, do not leave personal belongings in the cabin and confirm the return location and opening hours in advance. A short preparation prevents unexpected expenses and makes the journey much calmer.

For this kind of trip, I would probably choose a compact SUV.
